According to the National Cancer Institute, mesothelioma is a malignant cancer of the pleura, the peritoneum, and the pericardium (the sacs lining the chest, abdominal cavity and the heart). Malignant mesothelioma has been linked to asbestos exposure, and those exposed to more asbestos or for a longer duration are likely to have more intense cases of mesothelioma. People stopped using asbestos in insulation materials in the 1970s, so with the 20 to 50 year latency period between exposure and acquisition of mesothelioma, many are just now discovering that they have the cancer.
Which either way they have been exposed they now know the odds are high of developing this type of cancer. It's not just challenging on the person who has contracted it but on their entire family network and friends. Fortunately there are now many support groups available from trained professionals, fellow mesotheliomasufferers and others that have had experience through family members. Most towns and cities have cancer support groups that meet on a regular basis to share experiences and offer help and support to other sufferers. Feedback has shown that this is the best way to get the support you need from others in the same position.
Chemotherapy refers to treatment of cancer by using anticancer drugs. These anticancer drugs are injected into the patient's vein to battle and kill the cancer cells throughout the body. Chemotherapy is often used when the cancer disease has spread to the bigger extent of the body.
Another therapy called Palliative therapy, which involves using suction and needle to drain excess fluid from the cancer patient's lung. The Palliative therapy is not a curative therapy. It cannot give cure to the patient but it can help the patient decrease pain suffering experience.
