2009 Chevrolet Aveo

The Chevrolet Aveo sedan and Aveo5 hatchback are a pair of no-frills five-seat subcompacts aimed at efficiency and affordability. Our drive time was spent with the Aveo5, which gets a mild facelift and revised interior styling for 2009. The sedan's aesthetics, however, have remained the same. Both models received a slightly upgraded engine.

The Aveo is still powered by a modest 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, but variable valve timing has been introduced to add an extra four horsepower. Regardless, the Aveo5 remains underpowered during periods of hard acceleration. Competitors like the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa perform much more competently in higher speed traffic.

But when it comes to fuel economy, the Aveo is right on par with the rest of the subcompact class. The 2009 EPA rating is 27 city and 34 highway. Our Aveo5 achieved 32.8 miles per gallon in a 162-mile roundtrip test loop from Churchville, Md. to Philadelphia, Pa. and back. Approximately 80 percent of the mixed drive was comprised of 50 mile per hour state routes and two-lane highways, while about 20 percent took place through in-town traffic.

As for ride and handling, the Aveo is adequate, but again falls short to foreign competitors from Honda, Toyota, and Nissan. It just does not have the same solid, balanced feel. In other words, the Aveo is a good choice for daily commuting, but longer hauls may become tiresome. Aveo has good headroom, but is short on space for the legs. In terms of practicality, the Aveo5 offers a decent amount of usable cargo space, especially with rear seats folded down. There's a versatile 60/40 split folding feature to accommodate a combination of passengers and cargo.

The 2009 Aveo’s base price is hard to beat: $11,500.

Buying a New Car Tips and Guides

It seems as though everyone is out to get our money. Costs are skyrocketing and more and more products and services are out vying for our attention. Media is focusing its attention on "rear attacks" by directing its advertising on our children, our needs, our fears and emotions. Okay, well, that part's not new, but it's certainly more effective.

Brand recognition is critical for highly competitive retail items and customer service and reputation is the variable that either makes or breaks the deal.

So, why hasn't any of this competition changed the way we buy cars?

Remember back in the 70's? The good old days when buying a new car meant strolling down to the nearest cheesy car lot, getting battered by a slick, fast-talkin' dude all decked out in his disco best.

How is it that, even though the attire and cheese-factor have changed, the slick, fast-talkin' dudes still exist? And seem to be doing better than ever.

Today's car dealerships boast increased customer support and service; touting special employees that are there to serve only you. They preach their employees are very customer-focused and are there to serve your every need.

But are they?

As consumers, we really have developed a false sense of security when it comes to car dealers and buying our cars. Surely things can't be the way they were just a few decades ago. Companies that don't adhere to the growing customer-is-always-right mantra are certainly companies that don't last long....right?

Well, I'm here to say that the wolf has certainly stepped out of the disco-70's garb....and is now wearing a clean white dress shirt, slacks and tie. Folks, the wolf is alive and well and is waiting for you to come fall victim to his fake loyalty to you.

How did they slip through the cracks? How did they manage to maintain their huge profitability through all of society's demands for increased customer service? How is it that we still have to endure the experiences we do when we go to buy a car?

I'm here to say, the auto dealers have adapted quite well. No longer are they wolves...now they are lions.

Our generation of car buyer has been given a false sense of security due to the internet. We think that simply by knowing what the internet says the dealer invoice is that we have some sense of power over them. Well, actually, all we know is what they supposedly paid for the vehicle. That doesn't mean they are going to gnash their teeth and say, "Oh darn it, Frank and Betty Smith found out our hidden secret invoice amount...now we HAVE to sell it to them for that!"

Not at all, my friend.

Sure, the dealer is motivated to sell cars. If they don't sell you a car, they don't make any profit. But, if they don't make and profit, they don't sell you a car.

The myths surrounding the dealers still exist; the secrecy is what has kept them so profitable through the turn of the millennium.

Who monitors the car deals to make sure it was all handled fairly and you paid a fair profit for the car? Who watches out to make sure those people with bad credit are really put back on the right track to rebuilding their life with their auto loan?

It's like putting the witch in charge of Hansel and Gretel's health regimen; the "what's in it for her" is much greater than the "what's in it for them."

The only people watching out for you when you are car buying is YOU. It is up to you to be vigilant and protect yourself, your credit, and your money. You can count on the lions stalking you when you call or go in to the lot. You can count on them wanting to still make more money off of you than you make in a month or two at your job. Count on it. And if you aren't careful, it'll come true.

It's going to take more than the internet to protect you from these predators. You will need to look at buying a car in a whole new light. A new breed of car buyers needs to emerge to keep these dealers in check and not let them bully and trick us into handing over all of our hard earned cash and credit rating.

Hybrid Rental Cars

With so much concern for our environment and soaring gas prices, more and more travelers looked to rent hybrid vehicles this summer, hoping to save money. The price of the hybrid rental cars soon put any thought of savings, out the door!

Even renters who were just interested in checking out and driving a hybrid car found the prices hard to swallow and the hybrid cars hard to come by! Supply is so limited and demand is so high that car rental companies are charging high rates for these specialty rental cars. Many times the price of a hybrid car rental, like a Toyota Prius, was even more than an SUV.

The high markups are probably due in large part to low supply and high demand. Most car rental companys' fleets are less than 2% hybrid vehicles. Because the hybrids are in such short supply in the car market in general, they cost more for the rental companies to buy than a regular economy
size or compact size car. These costs are passed on to the renter.

It will be interesting to see if the demand for hybrid rental cars will continue when it would seem that the cost of gas savings don't make up for the higher price of the rental itself. If the price to purchase hybrid rentals starts to come down, the car rental companies will be more likely to increase the number of them in their fleets. But, for now, for most travelers, a small, economy vehicle with good gas mileage is kinder to their pocketbook, if not the environment.

Hybrid Car Tires - Increase Your Hybrid Mileage Even More

Today as more and more non-renewable energy sources are getting exhausted across the world, people are veering towards ways of saving energy and using alternate energy resources. Hybrid cars that can run on two or more energy source for example, gasoline, electricity, hydrogen, etc. are an attempt towards saving energy. Hybrid cars as a result are generally designed to save energy from its engines to its tires. Most hybrid cars available today run on low-rolling resistance tires.

What are low-rolling resistance tires?

Low-rolling resistance tires in simple words are those tires that roll easily on the road thereby creating less friction in other words less resistance between the road and the tire. Today most of the hybrid cars run on these tires. These tires are easy on the engine and as a result save a lot of energy which in turn saves your gas expenses. Low-rolling resistance tires also help the driver in handling the car on the road, are more stable on the run and are durable.

How do these work?

As in all tires, even for low-rolling resistance tires generate heat at three different places - the friction between the road and the tire, the heat generated within the walls of the tire and the heat generated between the rim and the tire. Now in a low-rolling resistance tire, the manufacturers try to reduce the amount of heat generated by the tires. This is achieved by a number of ways:

• The tread of the tire is designed in a different way.
• The material is used such that it generates less heat. Mostly strong but light material is used to help generate less heat.
• The tires can run without air for at least fifty miles which means that even if you have a flat tire you can drive till your nearest mechanic without being stranded.

How can such tires save energy and money?

Statistics show that low-rolling resistance tires can improve the rolling resistance of your car by 25% which in turn can give an improved mileage by three to five percent. The material used reduces the heat generated which saves fuel. Although you may need to pay $40 extra on buying a set of low-rolling resistance tires, you may eventually save up to 6% of gasoline usage.

Although there is hardly any negative point about these tires, if you are a bit of a wild driver and go on long off-terrain drives, then may be the tread of low-rolling resistance tires will not be sufficient for you.

Apart from that consumers and authorities have both taken notice of the low-rolling resistance tires so much so that California has come up with the law where replacement tires are supposed to be of the same quality, performance and efficiency of the tires of a new car, which are mostly low-rolling resistance tires.

Most hybrid cars come with low-rolling resistance tires. However when it comes to getting replacement low-rolling resistance tires it gets a bit tough and contacting the manufacturers directly would probably be a safe bet.
